GA Paris presents the evolution of contemporary architecture over more than a century, from 1906 to 2012.
The urban community of LYON has 58 municipalities and covers 51 500 hectares in the heart of the Rhone-Alps second region of France, with just over 5 MM inhabitants. The population of Greater Lyon is more than 1.3 million people, 80% of the population in only 16% of the territory of the department. Lyon approaches the third millennium with a set of major projects thal will strengthen the economie industrial and innovative sectors (biotechnology, digital images …) and ensure the flow of traffic both to the city (airport, TGV, motorways), and outside the city (airport rapid transit downtown , extension and mesh networks tram and metro).
To be properly understood , contemporary architecture must be placed in the context of its era. The period leading from the star! of the 20th century to the present day can be divided in 7 periods: 1901-1919: Electricity, the car and reinforced concrete fuelled dreams of revolutionary architecture and a new form of town planning. ln 1917, two years before the Bauhaus was founded ,Tony Garnier published his revolutionary blueprint for an « lndustrial city ».
1920-1944 Major social movements and the second World War shook France. lt was the time of the Spirit Nouveau magazine, marked by Le Corbusier and the discovery of functionalism ,the machine aesthetic and purism. Michael Roux Spitz, Jean Prouvé, Fernand Fargeot, Tony Garnier and J. Bergerot.
