First Paul Wurth Master Thesis Award in Energy and Environment_

Luxembourg, 20th January 2015. In 2014, Paul Wurth S.A. organised for the first time the Paul Wurth Award in recognition of outstanding Master Theses in the field of energy and environment. The aim of this prize is to foster young Luxembourgish students in engineering and sciences who are doing research work in the domain of environmental technology or energy, resp. energy recovery approaches.

For this first edition, Paul Wurth recognised two students – Roberto Palumbo and Eric Gonderinger – with the winner award and a money prize of EUR 2 000 each for their excellent scientific work.

Palumbo’s master thesis “Ermittlung der Eigenspannung bei einseitig geschweißten Stumpfnahtverbindungen von Rundprofilen” (Basic research on residual stress of welded profiles used e.g. for support structures in offshore wind parks) and Gonderinger’s thesis “Aufwandsoptimierte Konzeption einer elektrifizierten Dreirad-Variante unter Rückgriff auf die Entwicklung eines Zweirad-Pedelecs für den Zustellbetrieb” (Optimised conception of a 3 wheel pedelec for post workers) had been evaluated by a jury composed of Paul Wurth engineers. Before the final decision, the candidates were invited to present their work in front of the jury committee.

The award ceremony took place at Paul Wurth’s headquarters on 15th January 2015. Both winners received their award from Georges Rassel, CEO of Paul Wurth, who highlighted their distinguished achievements and underlined Paul Wurth’s intention to support, as an innovative and future-oriented company, young creative talents at the beginning of their professional career.
