Creative Business Cup_

This year, Luxembourg participates for the first time in the Creative Business Cup that will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark on 18-20 November 2013. This international contest is the “World Championship” for entrepreneurs working in Creative Industries. It was held for the first time in 2012 with 19 participating countries. More than 40 countries have confirmed their participation in this year’s edition in order to showcase the creative potential of their Creative Industries.

With the support of the Danish Embassy in Luxembourg, Luxinnovation (National Agency for Innovation and Research), Technoport (National incubator) and 1535° C – Kreatiffabrik Déifferdeng have joined forces to act as “national host” and organise the Luxembourg participation in the competition. The three organisations have selected the company stayconcrete Sàrl and its CEO, furniture designer Petar Ivanisevic, as Luxembourg’s candidate who will be sent to Copenhagen in November in order to present its business concept to an international jury. The company will thereby be competing for a number of prizes and the title as the world’s best entrepreneur within Creative Industries.

Concrete products with an innovative business concept

The company name “stayconcrete” reveils the specific characteristic of its products – the furniture Mr Ivanisevic designs is made out of concrete.

“Concrete is an extremely versatile material that can be customised to include every detail of the customers’ needs. We process our special quality concrete on its own or in combination with other high quality materials to ensure that we produce furniture of the highest quality”, explains Mr Ivanisevic.

At the Creative Business Cup, Mr Ivanisevic will present a unique piece of outdoor furniture. It is a seating and table structure designed for the exterior of the restaurant Go Ten, a popular club and cafe in Luxembourg. The seats have a heating structure incorporated, which means that sitting outside in winter is not only possible – it is also comfortable. In addition to its exceptional design and material, an innovative business model is used to commercialise the outdoor furniture.

Creative Industries – a driver for new jobs and innovation

Many recent studies have shown that the Creative Industries include highly innovative companies with great economic potential. The sector is one of the most dynamic in Europe, contributing around 2.6 % to the EU GDP, and has strong potential for growth, job creation and contribution of added value to other products and services. Creative Industries are significant generators of intellectual property, in particular copyrights, and in general, regions with high concentrations of Creative Industries have Europe’s highest prosperity levels. In addition, Creative Industries have a positive spillover effect on more traditional businesses since they foster the take-up of new technologies and stimulate innovation. Therefore, it is time to put the Creative Industries in the spotlight!

In Luxembourg, Luxinnovation, Technoport and 1535° C – Kreatiffabrik Déifferdeng are working hand in hand in order to support entrepreneurs from the Creative Industries. Luxinnovation offers a wide range of services to innovative start-ups and companies working in the Creative Industries sector and acts as an interface for initiating contacts with industrial and technology partners. One of the Agency’s objectives is to promote design as an innovation tool among Luxembourg businesses. In this context, Luxinnovation is partner in the European project “PROUD” (People Researchers Organisations Using Design for innovation and co-creation) that federates designers, public organisations, businesses and user communities to experience the added value of design thinking and design, while working on innovative solutions for today’s real world problems.

Technoport offers incubation facilities in Belval and is an essential component of the City of Sciences and Innovation, which connects the University, research centres and businesses. The main objective of Technoport is to offer the best conditions possible for the creation and development of technological and innovative projects and enterprises in Luxembourg. The aim is to reduce entrepreneurs’ risk for failure as much as possible by offering them access to networks of partners, individualised coaching and a work infrastructure and environment that corresponds to their needs. Another service offered at the Technoport is the FabLab (Fabrication Laboratory), an open prototyping platform where knowledge sharing is essential. Different kinds of tools are available for users (3D printers, laser cutter, milling machines, etc) in order to stimulate their creativity.

Developed by the City of Differdange, the 1535° C – Kreatiffabrik Déifferdeng is about to become a unique creativity hub in Luxembourg. 1535° C is the melting temperature of steel and refers to the industrial heritage of Differdange where the Kreatiffabrik is hosted. 1535° C also asserts a determination to merge several different dynamics in a spirit of community and sharing of expertise. It is an open platform for synergies to create networks in the arts and culture as well as jobs in the creative industries.
